For amateur entomologists, thrips have never ascended to a similar rank as, for example, beetles or butterflies. For insect collectors thrips are simply too tiny and unimpressive. Furthermore, examinations of these insects are complicated because an elaborate preparation is needed, e.g. their inclusion in special resins, and last but not least by the microscopic determination which demands some experience. Accordingly, nowadays the inventory of literature, well managed collections and specialists is rather limited.
For these reasons Thysanoptera are often not included within the scope of insects‘ habitat analysis, species inventories or other ecological studies, which is unfortunate because small sized taxa often provide valuable data.
Some thrips are dreaded pest insects on cultural plants or vectors of plant viruses (e.g. Tospoviruses) and they can cause enormous economic damage to crops. Their early and precise identification, particularly of virus vectors, is crucial for pest control.
Here is your chance to get your thrips samples analyzed in order to complete your ecological data or to recognize pest species as quickly as possible. I will be happy to advise you on planning your projects focused on Thysanoptera. Please contact me!
