Insects with fringed wings

Small insects often possess wings of strange shape. Their travel speed is much to slow to get lift by aerodynamic forces. For this reason small sized insects do not use their airspeed for flight but the viscosity of the air. They fly like swimming in gluey honey. For this kind of movement fringed wings are particularly adapted.

In this gallery you will find insects of different orders with fringed wings.
